Contemporary Furniture Designers Celebrate Barbie’s 50th Birthday
2009 marked the 50th anniversary of a major cultural icon and throughout the December shopping season, all one could see in stores were anniversary editions of this cross generational symbol of high fashion, exquisite taste and sophisticated lifestyle.
The world of contemporary furniture did not miss the opportunity to pay tribute to Barbie’s milestone. Kartell, a leader in plastic designer furniture, spearheaded the efforts with a limited edition of Louis Ghost Chair and a smaller Lou Lou Ghost Chair, both designed by Philippe Stark feature a transparent finish in powder pink and a hand illustrated vintage Barbie profile and logo. Kartell, who also celebrated their 60th anniversary, extended the salute through a spectacular window display that placed Barbie in real life settings with real-life Kartell furniture.

Jonathan Adler opted to celebrate Barbie’s birthday with a limited edition “Barbie Loves Jonathan Adler” collection which includes miniature Barbie furniture and accessories and Barbie-inspired accessories. Adler’s designs pair his vivacious style with Barbie’s colors and her fabulous chic. The Barbie-inspired collection includes decorative pillows with “Barbie sayings” and “Barbie silhouette”, plates, candles titled “Malibu Dream”, and various bathroom accessories all of which sport the hot pink, black and white retro look.

Sicis coincidently launched its Audrey collection of shoe-shaped bathtubs. Designed by Massimiliano Della Monaca, Audrey 03 features a pump-inspired silhouette with a 65” high heel and adorned with precious glass mosaic in hot pink color with bows serving as its Barbie-ish pattern.
