2010 Milan Design Trends – Walnut Remains a Dominant Force

Monday, June 7th, 2010

While in 2008 and 2009 walnut finish was in its infancy mode and no one really knew whether it will survive its first year among interior giants, the 2010 International Furniture Fair in Milan proved that walnut has the interior stamina to be considered more than just finish du jour and potentially reach the same powerful popularity that wenge finish relished over the past years.  Needless to mention, walnut was consistently used throughout the show with applications that stretched into all living spaces.

Some of the most eye catching modern design that involved the neutral, serene tonality of walnut included an Emmemobili dining table who’s geometrically inspired base amalgamated walnut, white and wenge into a multidimensional grid-like pedestal that is complimented by a clear glass top for further admiration of the sculptural designer dining table.

The Italian furniture giant Porada integrated walnut into essential most of the components of their 2010 collection, a few examples include the Kiko coffee table that is made of pressure-bent walnut planks, Suturnia dining chair is in effect all walnut and so are the Cell round bookshelves.

Draenert, a German innovative designer furniture manufacturer introduced Figura side table collection in three different sizes and shapes made of oiled American walnut with inserted glass plate.

Milan Design Week 2010: Bright Woods Collection by Giancarlo Zema

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

A spectacular product ensemble, futuristic, innovative, highly unique and rich in versatility, a design slam-dunk, the Bright Woods Collection by Giancarlo Zema for Avanzini Group for indoor/outdoor utility features chair, table and coffee table with predominant organic silhouettes, natural materials and incredibly powerful presence.  Made of wood in accordance with the name of the collection, Bright Woods elements glow in the dark with the help of thin, linear resin rings available in vibrant colors like orange, pink, green, and white.  As for the overall aesthetic value of this modern furniture collection, it is second to none as a functional, sculptural, visually enticing grouping that is mostly avant-garde with slight insinuation of primal, ethnically inclined contemporary furniture design.

Salone de Mobile 2010 – Fratelli Boffi Animalia Collection by Nigel Coates

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Just when you think you’ve seen everything, you are proved wrong, and the best place for that particular revelation to take place is at the annual Salone de Mobile or the International Furniture Fair in Milan.  This year was full of mind blowing, jaw dropping designs and collections, one of which was the Animalia Collection by Nigel Coates for Fratelli Boffi.  Can you say “wow” a thousand times?  Walking through their designer furniture showroom, you could hear gasps everywhere because whether willingly or not, you were transferred into an exotic country lodge a la modern style.  Enchanting, thematic and (for now) really unusual, the Animalia Collection carefully amalgamates exquisite craftsmanship (that Nigel Coates is so famous for) with exceptional materials (like embossed leathers, exotic textiles and the finest woods) while maintaining focus on interior design aesthetics and ingenuity.  The collection had a natural flow, but not only because of its organic inclinations, rather because of its intrinsic totality.

The collection featured a stunning pebble-like sofa, chairs and tables with bowed legs and club chairs with carved backs, but pictures speak so much louder than words…so have a look.

2010 Milan Design Week 2010 Color Trends

Monday, May 24th, 2010

2010 Milan Design Week was full of novelties, new forms, new functions, new designers and new colors.  And although designer furniture industry, just like fashion is by nature defined by color, it was evident that four color trends repeatedly dominated most modern furniture showrooms and many of the new collections.

Tortora, is a carryover from last year, but in a more pronounced fashion.  Soft, warm and unpretentious; neutral and natural, soothing and organic with a perfect fit in any room and with most popular wood finishes like walnut and wenge.  Tortora tones include rich chocolate browns, creamy caramels, delicate mochas and smooth cappuccinos.  Ceccotti showroom was defined by tortora whether through high gloss lacquers or wood stains.  Also for Bonaldo, the Big Dining Table with one of its base finishes featuring three different shades of neutrals was complimented by a walnut table top.

Gray tones were vividly present this year albeit their gloomy connotations.  With a lavish palette which included light grays, neutral grays, warm grays and charcoals, it is safe to accolade the come-back of this color trend to industrial architecture and its growing infatuation by mainstream consumers.  Fixating on modernism, the grey palette of urban, muted shades like stone, asphalt, steel and cement will be here for a while although possibly redefined and regrouped with whatever color de-jour is.  See Cattelan Italia’s 2009 Brera Dining Table in 2010 grey color hue or the Independent sofa collection by Giovanni Erba that was purposely upholstered in various shades of gray.
