Tatami Style Modern Beds

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

The tatami style of beds originated in 16th century Japan and served as the foundation to the design and utility of today’s modern platform bed.  While the platform bed has evolved into a wide-spread phenomenon with oodles of options, the tatami bed design remained fairly true its original.  Tatami style is primarily recognized for its simplicity, linearity and lack of over fussed details.  More specifically, tatami beds don’t have a headboard, are very low to the ground and bear minimalism as its defining feature.  Some great examples of this bed style come from Italy’s leading modern furniture manufacturers and some incredible designers that highlight the sheer purity of this design and celebrate its ancient origins and its modern influences.

LED lights or light-emitting diode were introduced as a practical electronic component in the 60′s and quickly became an efficient, cost effective replacement for incandescent and neon lights.  The use of LED technology in modern furniture flourished with advanced research and development in the field and findings that LED lights are not only efficient but they are small, available in a variety of colors and are ideal in frequent on/off applications.  LED lighting makes any piece of furniture exquisite and are especially impactful when used in combination with glass for a dramatic statement.

Separate Bedrooms – new marriage trend with more room and reason to decorate

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

A recent article in the New York Times caused quite a hoo-hah around the country, reaching millions through every media outlet imaginable within days of its publishing.  The hot-button article discussed the results of a 2005 study by the National Sleep Foundation and various recent studies in England and Japan that successively found a growing trend where 1 in 4 married couples today choose to sleep in separate bedrooms or beds.  The findings of these studies were further legitimized by the National Association of Home Builders who anticipates as much as 60% of custom homes to have dual master bedrooms by 2015.

Morning talk shows on TV and radio as well as most newspapers around the country and countless blogs went to bat for or against this trend, some defending the marriage institution and the bedroom as if it was their personal obligation.  This media hoopla even bothered to involve the infamous Brangelina household (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt) as a valid example to prove the catchiness and conveniences of this trend.  However, what no one really touched on (so far at least) with respect to this subject are the vast opportunities this trend represents.

Going beyond the obvious advantages of having separate sleeping quarters, the architectural propensities of “his and hers” spaces present quite a revolution in modern bedroom décor.  Not only does it resolve all décor disagreements and the need to settle, but also grants the freedom to create two separate and different spaces where the couple will feel entirely different (décor does effect the mood).  The two bedrooms can be: feminine and masculine; bold or soft; modern or traditional; red or white…

From variations in décor style, to different color schemes, to personalized functional conveniences; the couple will be able to create two environments to enjoy together or alone.  This trend is not, by any means, a reincarnation of the oddity about your grandparents separate sleeping quarters, but rather an adventurous way to a marriage, one with creativity and spontaneity, not to mention a great deal of potential rest and intimacies.
