Wooden Surfaces by Elisa Strozyk

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Have you ever experienced wood in a skeptical, contradictory, and unexpectedly censorial way?  If you have not, then with the help of an emerging German furniture designer named Elisa Strozyk, you now have an opportunity to find out what happens when a familiar material is taken out of its typically predictable context and is reapplied, reinvented and reconfigured as something entirely unconventional and unexpected.

Wooden Textiles by Elisa Strozyk

Strozyk’s innovative Wooden Textiles collection is a true testament to the spirit of modern design and European contemporary furniture manufacturing.  By reconnecting traditional wooden surface with its new form, Strozyk defines what unpredictable appearance textures, surfaces and materials will undertake in the future.

Unconventional convenience of the modern sideboard

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Over the years, this highly functional furniture element, often referred to as buffet, cupboard, or sideboard, maintained its essential role in the modern house, with slight yet relevant and even expandable tweaks.  Sideboard’s newly stretched utility is tightly rooted in two, boldly significant trends within the modern furniture industry.  The first trend is an attribute of architecture by way of spatial borders elimination between the living, dining and kitchen areas.  The second trend alludes to the sideboard’s innate capacity to conceal and store items of various sizes.  Hence, the new home of the modern sideboard is no longer pegged exclusively to the dining room but rather pretty much anywhere where storage is needed and where it is convenient, not necessarily conventional.  Paralleling the newly found “unconventional convenience” of the modern sideboard is its ingenious design and unexpected material application examples of which are really mind-blowing.

As the Rolling Stones song goes, “And it sure been a cold, cold winter…”

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

…And the wind ain’t been blowin’ from the south…”.  It certainly has been a brutal, snowy winter with yet more to come.  Between shoveling and plowing and digging ourselves out, stopping only for a short time to catch our breath, (unless we are between the ages of 3 and 15), winter has certainly been an under-appreciated season, a time of the year that is infrequently enjoyed for its magical enchantment.   This is not the case for modern furniture designers and leading European furniture manufacturers who find winter an inspiration for their magnificent designs.  A creative diversion from the physicality of winter, the following modern furniture designs have one thing in common and that is their unusual interpretation of winter, realization of which is translated into modern coffee tables, contemporary bookshelves and luxurious designer sofas.
